• MOVIE REVIEW: Patrik-Ian Polk's #TheSkinny

It was a full house in Atlanta on Saturday night as the cast and producer of 'The Skinny' joined supporters at the Landmark Theatre in Midtown Atlanta for the premiere. The theatre was so full that benches had to be brought in to accommodate the overflow.

Many people are very familiar with the Noah's Arc series which is why it came to no surprise that many rushed out to catch Patrik-Ian Polk's new film that featured the LGBT community. I entered the theatre thinking that I would sit the entire time comparing each character in the film to the characters in Noah's Arc; however, I was wrong.

The film starts out explaining the purpose from the jump. Five friends that graduated from NYC's Brown University meet up for a weekend of fun in the big city. Everything starts off good before scandal and heartbreak rocks the circle and causes things to over boil. Relationship problems, drugs, and sex are just some of the topics which were focused upon in the film.

I commend Patrik-Ian Polk for shining light on some of the things that really go on in our community. The crowd really got a tickle during the movie when one character taught another how to 'fleet' before sex. During the Q&A following the film, an audience member applauded Patrik for educating the audience about the matter via his craft. Another touchy subject that was shown during the film was the 'sex party' scene. Come on, we all know that these things go on in the community so lets not pretend. And for the matter of drugs, Patrik shed light on how the transitions goes down in the club and leads to regrets the following morning. I also like how Patrik slipped in some important information about HIV/AIDS transmission without being preachy.

The film was packed with great actors and actresses that displayed raw emotion and personalities from start to finish. There wasn't one time that I compared one character to another one from his previous work.  I was caught off guard by the numerous scenes of nudity shown in the film, including a scene from a porno flick. Like the rest of the theatre, I was excited to see some familiar faces from the Noah's Arc series included in the film.

I highly suggest that you guys go see the film.

Patrik revealed during the Q&A session that the sequel to the film will be shot in Atlanta. Also, the movie will be sent to LOGO this Summer.

The film will run thru Thursday in Atlanta. Find your city and premiere date on SkinnyTheMovie.com!
